Portia's Legal Page

Portia is well known as the female character in William Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice who dresses up as a male to impersonate a lawyer to plead a case before a court. Portia as such almost may almost constitute a symbol for all transgendered attorneys, MtF or FtM. Though I have retired my bar admissions, I actually have a Portia wig, that is a wig which typifies the hair style worn by many lady lawyers so that they may easily be distinguished in court. (I rarely wear it to meetings.)

The present page and any subpages will be used to display transgender-related legal materials. It should at all times include regularly appearing lavender law TG-relevant documents from the Internet. If there are ongoing cases or drives for legislation, sections will be added as needed. The reason for posting this material is that, while it may be posted on certain websites, these may not be well known to support group members, and by posting diverse columns and notices on one page, members do not have to browse numerous websites to obtain such material.

Three caveats. First, the Support Group cannot offer advice on specific cases. Members will have to contact an attorney for this. Second, should this page or the Links page ever contain links to attorneys, never put confidential material in an e-mail contact. Simply state who you are, that you need an attorney, and tell the attorney how he/she may contact you. The same applies for telephone voice mail messages. Just say who called and give a call back number. Third, the non-profit status of the Support Group prohibits our advocating specific parties and candidates.
